Meltdowns without shame: a 3-step script for parents

Parenting · Ploy Sirisakul · 6 Feb 2026

A parent kneels to match a child’s eye level during a hard moment.

1. Get lower

Physically get below your child’s eye line. It interrupts the stress response faster than any word you could say.

2. Name what you see

“You’re really frustrated. You wanted the yellow cup and there isn’t one.” Not a question. Just a description. The feeling gets to be real.

3. Offer a next step, not a fix

“Do you want to walk with me to the quiet corner, or stay here and breathe?” Two small options — the child keeps some control, you keep the frame.

The reason this works isn’t magic. It’s that you’ve made the feeling acceptable without making the behavior acceptable. Those are two different things.
