How to set up a calm corner at home

Parenting · Ploy Sirisakul · 16 Mar 2026

A cozy corner with cushions, books and a small plant.

Pick the right spot

Not a punishment corner. Not the child’s bedroom. A soft, semi-private place in a shared room works best.

Stock it with three things

  • Something soft to hold — a cushion or a heavy blanket.
  • Something quiet to do — a picture book or a simple sensory object.
  • A visual reminder of one calming practice — four breaths in, four out.

Introduce it when everyone is calm

The first time a child sees their calm corner should not be a hard moment. Set it up together. Sit in it together. Name what it’s for.
